How listings are vetted

  1. 1

    Find every venue

We start from public business records for wedding venues within 60 km of central Christchurch.

  2. 2

    Keep the current ones

Open venues with at least one review, updated in the last year. Duplicates merged, non-venues removed.

  3. 3

    Read the venue's website

Ceremony, reception, BYO, accommodation and other features are marked only when the venue's own site says so.

  4. 4

    Show what is not known

If the website does not say, the venue page shows 'no information yet' instead of a guess.

Listings are free. Paid positions are always marked as paid, and they never change a venue's rating or the features shown.

Owners can claim a listing to correct details or add photos. A person checks every claim.

How to choose a wedding venue in Christchurch

Around Christchurch you can marry on a vineyard, in a garden estate, in a barn, on the Port Hills or in a city hotel. These five steps help you cut a long list down to two or three.

Fix your guest number, budget and date first

Pick a setting, then an area

Venues in North Canterbury, Selwyn and on Banks Peninsula can be a long drive from the city, so plan how guests get there and home. Those three areas also hold most of the venues with rooms on site.

One venue or two

Holding the ceremony and reception in one place saves moving guests between sites. If you split them, for example a ceremony in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and a reception elsewhere, allow for travel and parking. The council limits Botanic Gardens ceremonies to 12 chairs and a small signing table.

Find out exactly what the price covers

Ask these before paying a deposit

Put the venue on your marriage licence application, and a back-up venue too, as govt.nz advises. The licence must be arranged at least 3 working days before the ceremony.

How to read the venue pages. A tick on a venue page means the venue's own website says it. "No information yet" means the site did not cover it, so ask. Read each rating with its review count: a 4.9 from 9 reviews tells you less than a 4.6 from 600.

Frequently asked questions

Cost and booking

How much does a wedding venue cost in Christchurch?

Each venue sets its own prices, and a package, a per-guest price and a venue hire fee are not the same thing, so compare full quotes. 20 venues on this guide publish a starting price, shown on their cards with the GST status the venue states. The wedding venue budget calculator compares them with your guest number and budget.

Does the venue price include food and drinks?

Not always. Some venues cater everything themselves, 5 venues on this guide say you can bring your own caterer, and 6 say they allow BYO alcohol. Ask each venue for a written list of what its price includes.

Are wedding venue deposits refundable?

That depends on each venue's own terms. Read the deposit and cancellation terms, and get them in writing, before you pay.

When should we book our wedding venue?

Once you have a date, a rough guest number and a budget. Plan the marriage licence too: govt.nz says to arrange it at least 3 working days before the ceremony, and it expires after 3 months.

Choosing a venue

Which areas around Christchurch have the most wedding venues?

Central Christchurch, Selwyn and North Canterbury have the most on this guide (15 each), followed by East Christchurch (9). West Christchurch, the Port Hills and Akaroa and Banks Peninsula each have their own page too.

Are there small wedding venues near Christchurch?

Yes. 9 venues on this guide state on their own website a minimum of 30 guests or fewer, or a maximum of 60 or fewer. They include Bramble Grove, Darjon Vineyard, Okuti Garden, Oasis Cottage and The Starling Homestead. The Small weddings filter shows them all.

Can we bring our own alcohol (BYO)?

Some venues allow BYO and others supply every drink. A venue page shows BYO as yes only when the venue's own website says so. Confirm the terms and any corkage fee with the venue before you book.

Which venues have accommodation on site?

16 venues on this guide say guests or the couple can stay on site, most of them in North Canterbury, Selwyn and Akaroa and Banks Peninsula. Use the accommodation filter to see them all.

What happens if it rains on the day?

Ask every venue for its wet-weather plan, such as an indoor room, a covered area or a marquee. Only 6 venues here describe a wet-weather option on their website, so this is worth asking early.

Licences and permits

Does our venue need to be on our marriage licence?

Yes. govt.nz says you can only hold the ceremony in the places you put on your marriage licence application, and advises adding a back-up venue.

Do we need an alcohol licence for our wedding?

If alcohol is sold, for example a cash bar at a venue without its own licence, a special licence is likely to be needed. Christchurch, Selwyn, Waimakariri and Hurunui councils all ask for applications at least 20 working days before the event, through the council where the event is held.

Can we get married in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens?

Yes, for the ceremony, with a booking through Christchurch City Council. The council limits ceremonies there and at Mona Vale to 12 chairs and a small signing table, and does not allow confetti, marquees or vehicles.
